Cochin natural history society(CNHS) along with WWF-INDIA, biodiversity board of kerala and firfiles conducted several programmes on 17 May 2012 to 19 May 2012.Sivakumar from WWF of india spoke about the major problems faced by the migratory birds because of there loss of suitable habitats.Mr.Hari kumar spoke about "how to birdwatch".Mr.Vishnu introduced us about the common migratory birds of kerala.It was a nice interactive session to those who come for first including me.
As a part of WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY-(WMBD)-KOCHI,We had birding to puthuvippu LNG TERMINAL,beach and Mangalavanam bird sanctuary.
BIRDING REPORT.
Date and Day:Friday May 18,
Time:6:30am to 11:30am.
Locations:puthuvippu beach and mangalavanam bird sanctuary.
Weather:Sunny,hot day.
Birdwatchers:A team consisting of 20 birders.
Team led by:Mr.v.k sivakumar from WWF-India,Mr.hari kumar.
Bird list:
1.house crow
2.jungle crow
3.indian treepie
4.common myna
5.little egret
6.large egret
7.cattle egret
8.purple moorhen
9.white throated kingfisher
10.oriental darter or snake bird.
11.black kite
12.bhraminy kite
13.little cormmorant.
14.racket tailed drongo
15.black drongo
16.greenish wabler
17.common sandpiper
18.brown headed gul
19.black headed gull
20.sitting cisticola
As we find only a little number of gulls from puthuvippu beach.When i(ijas) along with Dr.s.prasanth had a birding just before two months,we had find almost 30,000+ gulls which include palla's gulls,hugelin's gulls,black headed gull,brown headed gulls and UNid's.We observed a huge decrease in number of gulls.We also didn't find any ibis here.
